OVERVIEW

"When the world wearies and ceases to satisfy, there is always the garden.”

Growing plants in your own garden is a very satisfying project. Here are some tips for gardening in our part of New Hampshire.

  • Start with healthy transplants. Look for dark green leaves and healthy young shoots. Tip the plant out of its pot and check out the roots. They should be white and in good quantities, but not root bound.
  • Check the plant tag for any pertinent information such as whether to plant in sun or shade or any particular cultural requirements.
  • Prepare your garden soil using compost. Mix the compost into the soil following the recommendations on the bag or at around 1 part soil to 1 part compost.
  • Just after planting, lightly pack down the soil around the roots and water in the plants.

Care in Transplanting

Here are some tips for a successful plant transplant...

Try not to pull plants up by their leaves or stems as this damages the stem and can lead to breaking the plant right in half.

First, water in your plants well.

Next, loosen the pot from the soil. Start by sliding your fingers around the stem of the plant and then flip the plant upside down.

Lightly squeeze the sides of the pot.

Then tap the bottom of the pot

.

Finally, pull up on the pot while maintaining your grip on the plant and soil.

You should be left with a nice root ball staring you in the face. Turn the plant over and place in your garden or planter.
