Dear
Info,
Mr.
Brewster, known around the farm
as "The Bee Man", has been
tending the hives here for years.
According to Mr. Brewster, he's even
left the bees to the farm in his last
will and testament. He
keeps 2 hives at the farm here on Main
Street and 2 more hives at the
strawberry fields on Pleasant Street.
Each hive can have 40,000 to 60,000
bees during the peak of summer.
There are plenty of bee facts at the N.H.
Beekeepers' Association website.
Last weekend, however, Mr. Brewster
checked on the hives and found that
one had not made it through the winter
and the other was just hanging on.
He thought it may be a bee dysentery
disease. He is ordering a new
queen and 10,000 workers for each
hive. These will be installed
this spring.
Mr. Brewster is a great storyteller
and a true N.H. native, a former state
representative and lives in Andover.
If you have the chance, strike up a
conversation.
Just
look for his license plate around
town.
Corned
Beef : Available
this week will be Star Lake Farm
Corned Beef! For a traditional
St. Patrick's Day dinner, this
pasture-raised, local beef brisket is
delicious. The standard
recipe for creating a Corned Beef
dinner is easy to follow. And
for a final flourish, you can try
Meg's Mom's special addition... after
the corned beef is cooked, apply a
layer of French's yellow mustard and
sprinkle with brown sugar and crushed
cloves. Broil until the sugar
starts melting.
Stop by the farmstand this Friday
afternoon to pick up your corned beef
brisket and native organic carrots and
parsnips.
We'll be offering our own Micro
Greens, local eggs, cakes from Marcia
the Cake Lady, more Honeycrisp apples
from Carter Hill Orchards in Concord,
NH. and Vt. & N.H. cheeses.
We'll
be stocked with Good Loaf artisan
breads & Star Lake Farm beef and
pork are available. MacNamara milk in
glass bottles, Rocky Cannoli's pies
(Red Barn Farm).
Edible
White Mountains: Just
off the presses, the latest issue of
Edible White Mountains is now
available. The magazine,
published locally by KC Wright,
celebrates New Hampshire foods, farms
and flavors season by season.
This is the fourth issue and includes
features on Community bakeries,
Rhubarb, Worm composting, Kids
gardening and rotational grazing to
name just a few. Complimentary
copies of the latest issue are
available at the farmstand or by
contacting KC at their website.

Farm News
We are
busy planting our cool (weather) planters.

Filled with pansies, alyssum, linaria,
columbine, primula, erysium and diascia, all
of which can survive frosty conditions.
We're combining these annuals and perennials
together to create frost tolerant planters
ready for early spring. They'll be a
welcome addition to your deck and doorstep.
Once the ground is ready, these combinations
can be planted in your gardens for color
through spring and early summer. The
perennial plants in the combinations are
hardy in our area and should bloom again
next year.
Look
for these blooming planters in April.
