 Dear Info,
   Winter Market - Fridays 3-6pm
starting Jan. 8th.slice farm sign

We're excited to open on Friday for our first winter market of the year.  We just confirmed that Carter Hill Orchards in Concord will drop off some Honeycrisp and Empire apples.  Honeycrisp are delicious and stay crisp for many months.
I just came in from digging carrots out in the snow. Frozen carrotsOne of the crazier things I've done here on the farm.  Two out of three rows were actually still thawed; only an inch of frozen soil on top.  The snow provides great insulation; some of the carrot tops still had a bit of green on them.  They are crisp and sweet with great carrot flavor.  We'll have these washed up and ready for sale on Friday.                                                carrots under frozen earth.
Roasted GarlicLynda from the Good Loaf is delivering bread Friday and we ordered a full range of loaves from the Cheddar Basil Sourdough to Nanny Van's Oatmeal.  For a full list of what we'll offer, check our web store (its still a work in progress, but we're adding pictures and information daily).
McNamara milk will be in the cooler along with fresh local eggs and Vt. cheeses.  And of course, Star Lake Farm beef is available in the freezer and all the beef is 10% off for this first Friday market.  Also available will be Springledge Micro Mix, Red Barn Farm pies and cakes by Marcia the Cake Lady.
Like Lambs to the Slaughter
In the spirit of transparency, I'll mention that I just picked up three lambs that we trucked to the butcher a few weeks ago.  These lambs were born here last spring and spent the spring, summer and fall grazing out on the pastures behind the house at the farm, eating old lettuce, sweet corn and pumpkins and generally behaving as all sheep behave.  They were not fed any sort of antibiotics & never needed any medicines.  Over 99% of their food was from vegetables and grass and hay, very little was from grain.  Out of the six lambs born this spring, we did keep the three ewe lambs, which brings our sheep population up to seven.
I took the three ram lambs to the same slaughterhouse that butchers the Star Lake Farm cattle: Over the Hill Farm in Vermont.  (click for a 2007 Boston Globe article about the slaughterhouse).  It is a USDA inspected facility known for quality custom work.  There is a USDA inspector on site every day.
Its not easy finding certified slaughterhouses where the resulting meat can be sold at a retail level.  In fact, there are none in New Hampshire and only a few throughout New England.  Over the Hill Farm is 2 hours away.  Delivering the animal on the hoof and then picking up the meat in vacuum sealed packages takes the equivalent of a full day (8 hours).  Hopefully, with the increased interest in locally grown meats, new facilities will be built closer to home.
Try out the Star Lake Farm and Springledge pasture-raised meat and let us know what you think.

As usual, we are collecting Christmas trees in our parking lot for recycling into mulch that we use on our blueberry bushes.

Please drop your tree off no later than January 11th.
No wreaths or roping please.  Thanks.
Congratulations!
New ArrivalWe're starting pansy and primula seeds down in the greenhouse,
and we have news of another fresh beginning -

Beth and Adam Dragon are proud parents of
Tucker Liberte Dragon, born Dec. 18th, 2009.
Congratulations to Beth and her family.

As always, please let me know of any questions.

Sincerely,

Greg Berger
