Lambs to the Slaughter
In the spirit of transparency, I'll mention
that I just picked up three lambs that we
trucked to the butcher a few weeks ago.
These lambs were born here last spring and
spent the spring, summer and fall grazing
out on the pastures behind the house at the
farm, eating old lettuce, sweet corn and
pumpkins and generally behaving as all sheep
behave. They were not fed any sort of
antibiotics & never needed any
medicines. Over 99% of their food was
from vegetables and grass and hay, very
little was from grain. Out
of the six lambs born this spring, we did
keep the three ewe lambs, which brings our
sheep population up to seven.
I took the three ram lambs to the same
slaughterhouse that butchers the Star Lake
Farm cattle: Over the Hill Farm in Vermont.
(click for a 2007
Boston Globe article about the
slaughterhouse). It is a USDA
inspected facility known for quality custom
work. There is a USDA inspector on
site every day.
Its not easy finding certified
slaughterhouses where the resulting meat can
be sold at a retail level. In fact,
there are none in New Hampshire and only a
few throughout New England. Over the
Hill Farm is 2 hours away. Delivering
the animal on the hoof and then picking up
the meat in vacuum sealed packages takes the
equivalent of a full day (8 hours).
Hopefully, with the increased interest in
locally grown meats, new facilities will be
built closer to home.
Try out the Star Lake Farm and Springledge
pasture-raised meat and let us know what you
think.

Trees to the Chipper.
As usual, we are collecting Christmas trees
in our parking lot for recycling into mulch
that we use on our blueberry bushes.
Please drop your tree off no later than
January 11th.
No wreaths or roping please. Thanks.
