Dear
Greg,
Winter
Market - Friday
February 19th 3-6pm
These
longer days mean that the spinach is
growing. We were a bit late
planting this last fall in our
greenhouse. Things were
good until mid-November when growth
just stopped. The lack of
daylight along with the low intensity
of the sun's rays means plant growth
slows to an imperceptible level.
A quick peak into the greenhouse the
other day, however, shows that the
spinach made it through the coldest
part of winter in this unheated space
and is beginning to grow new leaves.
We hope to harvest these greens in mid
to late March. Our
next crop of pea shoots is ready for
harvest. These are
delicious in salads or in a quick stir
fry. They taste like sugar snap
or snow peas. A great reminder
of early summer flavors.

Farm News:
We've
been to the latest trade show, visiting
plant vendors and organic fertilizer vendors
at the New England Grows show in Boston.
A few new ideas for 2010 include some new
Proven Winner plant varieties such as 'Snow
Princess' alyssum. We
will be growing these in our greenhouses and
have them ready for spring and summer.
Many wholesale growers and seedling growers
were touting their vegetable plant offerings
at the tradeshow. We took a look at
the varieties and quickly realized that our
selection is broader and better suited to
our neck of the woods. Since we are
vegetable growers as well as greenhouse
plant growers, we can evaluate the vegetable
plant varieties all summer and fall in our
own fields. Then we choose those
cultivars that do best in our part of N.H.
So when you purchase your vegetable plants
from us in the spring and summer, you know
they are well-suited to your garden.
